Tips for Painting Problem Walls

13
    • Painting the walls of your home is probably the quickest and least expensive way to give your home a makeover and add new life to your décor. However, some walls are not so easy to paint. Some walls do not have an even surface, which makes it difficult to cover them completely with paint. Other walls have damage, which also makes it hard to cover and hide the damage.

    Uneven Surfaces

    • Cover walls that have uneven surfaces by using a special roller. These walls include stucco, plaster or other heavily textured walls. Look for paint rollers with a thick nap. These rollers are specifically for uneven textures. The thicker nap allows you to get good coverage with the paint without having to go over the walls with multiple coats of paint. If you have a small area of an uneven surface to paint a paintbrush will work just fine, but definitely use the thick nap rollers for larger areas.

Sprayers work exceptionally well on uneven surfaces as well. You can spray a whole room in a very short period of time. However, you probably do not want to make the financial investment of a good paint sprayer to paint the walls of your home one time.

    Covering Damage

    • Repair any damage to your walls before doing any painting. Depending on the type of wall you have, make the necessary repairs, usually using plaster or drywall mud. Pieces of screen work well to cover up holes and will also hold onto the drywall mud when you apply it. If the damage is very noticeable on your walls consider adding something to your paint. Purchase a paint texture additive or simply add sand. Transfer the paint from the can to a larger container before adding the sand or texture, as the paint can overflow. Mix well and apply the paint to the wall as you normally would. The texture in the paint helps to mask some of the damage or repairs made to the wall.

    Painting Over Bold Colors

    • Forget about painting coat after coat on your problem wall to cover up a previous bold color, such as bright blue or red. Use a primer on the wall first before attempting to cover up the old color. You can even get the primer tinted to your paint color, which helps a lot. You may still have to apply two coats of primer, but if you have the primer tinted to the same color, you might be able to get away with using only one coat of the paint.
