My Neighbor Totoro
The film My Neighbor Totoro was written and directed by Hayao Miyazkai.
Originally released as part of a double feature alongside 'Grave Of The Fireflies' in 1988, it managed to win the Animage Grand Prix Prize for the same year.
50th Street Films produced the first English dub version of the film during 1993 and Fox video released it on video and DVD.
In 2004 Disney took over ownership of the rights for the movie and released a new version with different voice actors.
Disney launched its new version of My Neighbor Totoro at the 2005 Hollywood Film Festival and it was aired on Cable TV for the first time shortly afterwards.
The film is set in the 1950's, and begins with a university professor and his two daughters moving to the Japan countryside.
The two girls called Satsuki and Mei have an ill mother who is unwell and confined to a nearby hospital.
Whilst exploring their new home Satsuki and Mei find that their house is inhabited by soot sprites (small black creatures) who soon leave the house.
On a day when Satsuki is away at school, Mei discovers a new small creature and decides to follow it.
She finds that there are even more of these magical creatures who lead her to a hollowed out tree where she meets a larger version of these 'spririts'.
The style ofanimation is perfect to accompany the storyline of the movie.
This is definitely a very family-friendly anime film, and I would highly recommend it.
