Top 5 Speechless Pixar Characters

16
Pixar’s reputation for peppering their movies with memorable characters is nothing short of legendary, and it’s to the studio’s credit that they’ve even managed to transform their speechless characters into memorable, indelible figures – with the following five standing as the company’s best:

1. WALL-E ('WALL-E')

Who else could possibly be number one? WALL-E is an absolutely adorable trash-compacting robot that has been cleaning up our mess on a now-uninhabitable earth for decades, and he spends much of his time making up games with the objects he finds and watching an old musical on a barely-working television. Director Andrew Stanton effortlessly transforms WALL-E into a figure that’s just as compelling and sympathetic as his human counterparts, with the almost unbearably sweet relationship between the character and another non-speaking robot, EVE, standing as one of the most compelling romances in all of animation history.More »

2. Bullseye ('Toy Story 2-3')

In Toy Story 2, Woody is stunned to meet the other toys inspired by his short-lived ‘50s television show, Woody’s Roundup – including Jessie the yodeling cowgirl (Joan Cusack), a grizzled old prospector named Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer), and, of course, his faithful steed Bullseye. Bullseye immediately recognizes Woody and approaches him the way a dog might approach his beloved master, with this first encounter setting the stage for a loyal friendship that persists right through to Toy Story 3. (It’s worth noting, too, that Bullseye plays an instrumental role in saving his master’s life at the end of Toy Story 2, as he gallops to the rescue after Woody and Jessie find themselves trapped on an airplane heading to Japan.)More »

3. Kevin ('Up')

Kevin is… Well, nobody is entirely sure what Kevin is, including the heroes of Up, Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) and Russell (Jordan Nagai). As we learn in the film’s prologue, Kevin is an extremely rare flightless bird that is discovered by a famed explorer named Charles F. Muntz (Christopher Plummer). Carl and Russell first meet Kevin after they land in SouthAmerica, and it quickly becomes clear that Kevin, who could be either male or female, is on the hunt for his/her babies. Kevin communicates primarily with strange birdcalls provided by the film’s director, Pete Docter, and eventually saves the lives of Russell and Dug after he flies them to safety (while Muntz spirals to his death far, far below).More »

4. Jack-Jack ('The Incredibles')

Jack-Jack is the youngest member in the Parr family, after dad Robert/Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), mom Helen/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), sister Violet (Sarah Vowell), and brother Dash (Spencer Fox). For most of The Incredibles’ running time, everyone assumes that Jack-Jack doesn’t have any special powers and is just a normal, happy little baby. It’s not until the film’s villain, Syndrome (Jason Lee), attempts to kidnap him that Jack-Jack’s powers are revealed, as the infant’s shapeshifting abilities immediately manifest themselves and allow him to morph into a pesky little Devil-like creature that escapes from Syndrome’s grip.More »

5. RC ('Toy Story')

As his name indicates, RC is a remote-controlled car that lives happily among Andy’s toys. In the film’s action-packed climax, RC is called into action after Woody (Tom Hanks) uses his natural speed to help save Buzz (Tim Allen) from Sid’s vicious dog – though RC is eventually rendered powerless after his batteries die. Still, RC is a loyal, enthusiastic friend who fits in nicely among the rest of Andy’s toys and it’s worth noting that the character’s absence is certainly missed in both Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.
