Preparation

• Regardless of which method you choose, it is important to start with a clean surface. Remove the doors from the frames by detaching the hinge from the frame first. Use a removable sticker to mark which door belongs on which cabinet to avoid confusion when you rehang the doors. Remove the hinges and knobs and clean the metal parts with 0000-grade steel wool. Clean the cabinet frames to remove any grease and dirt build-up, and do the same to the doors.
  
  

Refinishing

• This is recommended for plain doors with no decorative trim or moldings, as it can be difficult to evenly sand in all the grooves and corners. With fine grit sandpaper, sand the finish off the cabinet frames and doors. Wipe with a wet clean rag to remove any sawdust. Apply the stain or varnish of your choice and allow to dry the recommended amount of time before reattaching the doors to the frames.
  
  

Painting

• If you choose to paint your cabinets, choose a paint that suits your intended décor and one that will hold up to washing regularly. Paint the frames and doors, including the back sides of the doors and allow to dry before rehanging. For more detail, you can use the same sponge or ragging techniques used in other areas of the house.
  
  

Papering

• If your cabinet doors have a panel in the center, you can add some interest by applying wallpaper in a complementary pattern to the center of the doors. A vinyl or washable paper is recommended for ease of cleaning. Determine what part of the pattern you want to use and measure the area to be covered. Then cut the paper and follow the manufacturer's suggestions for applying. Perhaps you just want a small decorative picture on each cabinet door, such as a teapot or rooster. Cut the design out and apply according to the manufacturer's directions. A thin coat of vanish or polypropylene will protect the design and help prevent lifting at the edges.
  
  

Add Raised Panels

• Consider adding raised panels to flat doors to add a layer of texture and design interest. Many home improvement stores sell finishing items that can be used for this purpose, if you aren't handy enough to cut your own. Simple finishing trim can add a more extravagant look, too.
  
  

Stenciling

• Once the base coat of paint is dried, you can hand-paint details or use a stenciling kit sold at many home remodeling or paint stores to spruce up the cabinet doors. Stenciling kits range from very simple to very elaborate.
