5 Mid Century Modern Chairs

23
Mid Century Modern is the look du jour. While it’s been enjoying a resurgence for the last 10 or so years, it’s really thanks to the uber-stylish TV show Mad Men that mid century design has gotten so popular.

The period spans a couple of decades in the middle of the 20th century, but there’s no set beginning or end. It’s casually agreed upon to have lasted from the early-mid 1930s to the mid 1960s.

Despite its popularity few people are designing their entire homes in this distinct look. This new homage to the mid 20th Century is more about incorporating these classic pieces into current styles.  The clean lines and uncomplicated silhouettes fit easily into modern interiors and people are using these classic pieces in all sorts of ways.

If you like the look of mid century modern but you’re not ready to commit your whole space, a single accent chair could be the way to go. Here are five great chairs that fit with the mid century look, but can look right at home in a wide variety of rooms. (For our purposes here, the term mid century modern applies to furniture that adheres to the style, not necessarily pieces that were designed during the period.)

1. Cavett Leather Chair

This contemporary chair from Crate and Barrel fits the mid century look to a T with it's organic wood frame, leather cushions and cantilevered seat. With no excess detailing or unneccessary flourishes, this chair could blend seamlessly into rooms of many different styles. And it's comfortable to boot!More »

2. Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair

This famous mid century chair was named one of the best designs of the 20th Century by Time magazine (as per DWR). Legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames designed the piece in 1946, and it began what turned out to be a long and lustrious partnership with Herman Miller. 3. Luna Chair

The Luna Chair is a new design but it could easily have been designed during the mid century period. It has the classic clean lines indicative of the period along with small but sturdy wooden legs. Designed by Edgar Blazona, this piece can add a little mid century flair to modern homes.More »

4. 1938 Leather Butterfly Chair

When it comes to design classics this is one of the most affordable you're going to find. Originally designed in 1938 by Argentinian architect Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy, the Butterfly Chair has been popular among design enthusiasts for decades. Not only is it stylish and affordable, the Butterfly chair can easily fold up, and in many cases you can change the cover to suit different decor schemes (but the leather is a favorite among many).More »

5. Barcelona Chair

This chair, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, definitely walks the line of mid century modern (some would argue it's not even close!). Designed in 1929, it is not technically part of the period, but it's often grouped in with other designs of the time due to its clean, unfussy look. People are often surprised by how comfortable the Barcelona chair is, but considering it was originally designed for the King and Queen of Spain to sit in, it better be! Barcelona chairs have remained popular over the years and experienced a notable resurgence in the early 2000s.More »
