Dog Travel Must Haves - A Complete Checklist

32
In times past dog owners were restricted as to where they went on vacation, a holiday get-a-way or even visiting a family member away at school.
Today our choices are far better with pet friendly restaurants, hotels and bed & breakfast.
Being prepared while on the road or arriving at your destination can either make or break a pleasant experience.
As the pet industry continues to explode with more and more pet travel products available, pet owners are able to provide a safe environment for four-legged traveling companions.
First on the list is a quality dog seatbelt or traveling dog crate to keep your pooch restrained should the unfortunate happen.
A dog safety belt offers pets the same protection while traveling in the car as they do with humans.
Not to mention during those rest area stops or when arriving at your destination a dog seatbelt prevents them from jumping out of the car when it is opened.
If you have nice leather seats, there are a number of seat covers on the market.
These are made to not only protect your leather but will capture any shedding hair.
If you have a taller car you may want to bring along a dog car ramp to help your pooch get in & out of the car.
These come in a fold-up variety and are perfect for larger older dogs that cannot be picked up.
Next is pack a set of dog travel bowls along with pet food and water.
Some dog travel bowls can be zipped up with the food ready to go when it's time to eat.
Remember to bring along your dogs favorite treat.
If your pooch can get a little antsy on long trips, having that favorite treat along, you know the one they'll do just about anything to have, will help keep them focused on something other than the moving car.
Always pack a scoop and dog waste bags for those necessities along the journey.
The dog apparel industry is also growing in leaps and bounds and packing a coat or protective dog safety vest is a must if boating and swimming are on the agenda.
Taking along a good supply of dog toys and their prized chew toy will help ensure that is the only thing in the hotel that is chewed on.
Finally, remember to pack along a first aid kit and your dog leash.
There styptic powders and gels available to help with any cuts or scrapes your four legged family member may encounter along the way.
In addition, if your dog is taking any medication a first aid kit is a handy place to keep pills and lotions.
There are other accessories to consider bringing on your trip such as dog sunglasses or dog goggles, a dog umbrella, and dog stroller for those long walks in highly public places - safer for both your dog and passers-by.
Take some extra care in packing all of your pets' travel items and make your trip together a happy and safe journey.
