How to Put Up a Snow Fence

7

    Location & Installation

    • 1). Determine the prevailing direction of your winter winds. Ideally, the fence should be installed at a 90 degree angle to the wind's normal path.

    • 2). Using the sledge hammer drive the first post. Posts should be driven to a depth of approximately one third their overall length. A 7-foot post should be driven about 2 1/2 feet deep. The flat side of the T-post should face the fence.

    • 3). Tie the string to the first post and have your helper stretch the string tight to a distance of 50 feet. Use the measuring tape. This marks the approximate end of the fence run. Drive the stake there. Tie the string to it and stretch it tight. This will ensure a straight fence line.

    • 4). Measure in 6 feet and drive another post. Using the T-post clips, attach the fence to the first post. The back of the clip should rest atop one of the post studs. Ideally, a fence slat should rest against the flat part of the posts and the clips will hold it fast.

    • 5). Unroll the fencing until you reach post number two. Stretch the fence as tightly as possible and clip it to the second post. Measure down another 6 to 7 feet and drive a third post. Use the fencing pliers if you need extra muscle when attaching the clips.

    • 6). Begin alternately unrolling, stretching and clipping the fence to each progressive post. Keep the posts within 8 feet of one another. Stretching the fence helps to prevent it from sagging.

    • 7). As you near the end of the fence roll, stretch it tightly. When you can determine with certainty where the last post in the fence line should be driven, drive it next. Clip the end of the fence to the last post.

    • 8). Measure back 6 feet from the end post and drive one more. Attach the clips to all five strands of wire at each post.
