What Is the Definition of Heatstroke?
- The main symptom of heatstroke is a body temperature above 104 degrees. Other symptoms include rapid pulse, shallow breathing, absence of sweat, confusion and unconsciousness.
- Call 911 immediately if heatstroke is suspected, says the Mayo Clinic. Decrease the core body temperature by covering the body in damp sheets. Lightly mist the body with cool water. Direct the person to drink water.
- People who are obese or who cannot regulate sweating are at risk for heatstroke. Children and the elderly are at high risk because of underdevelopment or deterioration of the nervous system.
- Shock, brain and vital organ damage, and even death can occur if heatstroke is not treated quickly.
- Stay indoors during very hot weather. Use air conditioning or fans for circulation. If you do not have air conditioning, go to a mall, movie theater or other public facility. Drink plenty of water.
