Public Information Procedures
- Tell agency holding the documents you want that you would like to review the information or receive a copy. The individual receiving this request depends on the agency, (i.e., finance officer, clerk of court, county auditor, etc.). Some entities charge for copies. Be sure you make a written request to receive the information.
- Depending on the state you are in, there will be a time period for the agency to respond to your request. In some states, agencies have 10 days to respond. There will be one of two responses -- a rejection of your request or a notice to let you know the information is available.
- If your request has been rejected, ask the agency why, then research the state laws regarding public information. If you determine the information you requested is public information, contact the state attorney general and make a report.
