Vegetable Gardening Under Pine Trees
- Pine trees create shady conditions that not all vegetables will grow well in. Most vegetables require a minimum of six to eight hours of full sun a day. Cool-season vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage grow in shady locations.
- Pine trees have a lower pH due to the acidic nature of decomposing pine needles that fall around the trees. Most vegetables prefer a higher pH. Select vegetables that do well in lower pH soil, such as potatoes.
- Pine trees have developed roots that may pull most of the water from the soil within a root zone. In order for your garden to grow well, water it often to replace moisture that the tree takes away.
