How to Heal a Lost Voice
It never fails. You went to the show of the year and now your voice is lost completely! Sometimes a man will joke around and tell everyone how he wishes his wife had this problem on poker night, but in reality this is no laughing matter! So what do you do when you can't speak at all? Never fear! We have the solution here.
Before we start with ideas, know that there can be more than one thing that causes you to lose your voice. You may have voicelessness, which is just strained vocal chords, and that will last from 3-7 days, or you might have laryngitis, a bacterial infection, which can last up to 3 weeks. It's important to see your doctor if you do not heal within 3 weeks.
First off, invest in drinking hot tea. I know, if you're like me, you got a big bottle of Dr. Pepper, or a six pack of Sam Adams with your name on it, but caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages are not going to help you get your voice back. Drink either ginger root tea, lemon teas or licorice root tea. For added help, instead of sugaring it up, add 1 tsp. of honey as it's sweetener. This will coat your throat nicely.
Second, your body can fight this irregularity with plenty of zinc and Vitamin C. If you want to buy herbal supplements, there's no fault in that, but hey, if the doctor's orders are to get more zinc and you can eat meat to get there, why not? Vitamin C is often found in citrus fruits and vegetables. I've had bad memories too as a kid about eating vegetables, but it turns out they actually have a use in this case.
Lastly, well, your vocal chords are damaged, right? So this is a no-brainer. Rest up and heal what's hurting you. Yes, this means you won't be trying out for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, but you're better off just resting -- don't speak if you don't have to -- if you do, try talking in a lower tone of voice. Do not whisper though. It actually strains your vocal chords more to whisper than to actually speak!
There's nothing wrong with losing your voice after the concert of the year and with the right medicine and tools, you can be back there rockin' with the best of them in no time, just take it easy if you lose your voice and don't let anyone tell you it's an improvement, or you'll have to throw them into the mosh pit.
