How to Check for Misdemeanors & Felonies in Indianapolis
- 1). Access the Public Records Inquiry page administered for the Odyssey Case Management System. This is the database that maintains trial proceedings for Indiana courts.
- 2). Select between performing a state-wide trial search or a search limited to a specific municipality in Indiana. In the case of searching for felonies and misdemeanors judged in Indianapolis, you can choose a state-wide search or select from one of the seven townships in Marion County.
- 3). Click the link labeled, "Criminal & Citation Case Records." This will narrow the search to criminal charges, as opposed to civil proceedings. In the "Search by:" field, choose "Defendant." Enter the first and last name of the person whose criminal record you are researching. Add the person's date of birth, if you know it, and click "Search."
- 4). Read the list of any trials found in the search query. The results page will show the name of the person involved, the type of offense and the local court where it was handled. The results will include cases where the defendant was found innocent or the charges were dropped, so an assessment of someone's criminal record in Indianapolis cannot be judged just by looking at the search results page. However, a final verdict should be included in the trial summary when you click on the individual trial records.
- 5). Contact the court where a trial took place if you are uncertain about whether the person was found guilty or if it was handled as a felony or misdemeanor. This may require a written request for information in accordance with Indiana's Sunshine Laws.
