Do It Yourself: Shower Curtains
- 1). Fold the 71-inch edges of the fabric toward the wrong side of the fabric 1/4 inch. Iron these folds using the heat setting appropriate to the type of fabric you are working with. Fold the same edges toward the wrong side of the fabric another 1/4 inch and iron these folds as well. Sew along the folded edges with a 1/8-inch seam allowance to create hemmed side edges for your shower curtain.
- 2). Fold the top and bottom edges of your shower curtain toward the wrong side of the fabric 1/4 inch. Iron these folds. Fold the top and bottom edges another 1/4 inch and press the folds. Sew the top and bottom folded edges with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Now all four edges of your shower curtain are hemmed.
- 3). Measure and mark in an inch from the left and right sides of the shower curtain and an inch down from the top edge. Make these marks with tailor's chalk. Make a mark every 6 1/2 inches between the first two marks until you have a total of 12 marks, including the first two. These marks indicate where the holes along the top of the curtain for hanging will go.
- 4). Switch out the presser foot on your sewing machine for the buttonhole foot. Most machines have a small lever your press to release the curtain foot and allow you to insert a new foot. Consult your machine's manual for specific instructions as the location of the lever and proper insertion of the foot.
- 5). Insert a 1-inch button into the back of the buttonhole foot so your machine knows what size buttonhole you wish to sew.
- 6). Sew a buttonhole at each chalk mark location along the top of the shower curtain. Use a seam ripper to rip the fabric along the inside of the buttonholes so you can insert shower curtain rings or hooks through the holes.
