How to Remove the Rear Axle Seal on a '92 Toyota Tacoma
- 1). Raise the rear of the vehicle and place jack stands under the axle housing. Lower the vehicle onto the stands. Remove the bolts securing the universal joint to the yoke using a wrench.
- 2). Pull the driveshaft toward the front of the vehicle to remove the universal joint from the yoke. Lay the end of the driveshaft on the ground. Remove the large nut in the center of the yoke using a socket and breaker bar. Place the drain pan under the yoke.
- 3). Pull the yoke off the pinion shaft. Insert the screwdriver through the center of the seal and pry the seal out of the housing.
- 4). Install the new seal by tapping it in gently around the edges until it is flush with the case. Install the yoke on the pinion shaft and tighten the nut until there is no longer any in and out movement. Install the driveshaft and bolts and tighten them securely.
- 5). Remove the filler plug on the top front side of the axle carrier using a wrench. Fill the rear with gear oil until it is level with the hole and begins to run out. Install the plug and tighten it firmly. Lower the vehicle.
