How to Make Pencil Drawings That Do Not Smudge

11
    • 1). Choose a type of pencil that's resistant to smudges. Avoid pencils with softer tips, as these tend to smudge more easily. If using a mechanical pencil, use lead made for colored pencils. According to artistdaily.com, oil-based pencils are relatively smudge resistant.

    • 2). Imagine your finished work beforehand, and figure out which parts to draw first to avoid having to put your hand over already-penciled areas. You may wish to start at one corner of the paper and work up, to avoid dragging your hand across the paper.

    • 3). Use a clean piece of scrap paper to keep your hand from touching your work. This paper should not move across the drawing while you work.

    • 4). Spray your work with fixative spray when you finish. This provides a protective barrier over your pencil drawing so it does not smudge.
