Styles of Deer Mounts
- Mounting just the antlers is cheaper and more rustic.antler image by sasha from Fotolia.com
Getting a mount of your trophy deer commemorates your hunt and maintains the majesty of the animal. Engraved plaques with the date of the hunt and the name of the hunter let people know who got the big buck. There are many options for deer mounts, but most must be done by trained and experienced taxidermists to prevent rotting and the spread of disease. - A cape mount is the most common type of mount for deer like white-tail and mule deer. This mount displays the deer from its head back to its shoulders, which is why it's sometimes called a shoulder mount. The head is usually in an upright and natural position to display the deer's rack of antlers. Cape mounts are made with the deer's tanned and cured skin and antlers which are stretched and attached to urethane foam forms to give a lifelike appearance.
- If you don't want a large mount hanging on the wall or don't want the expense of a cape mount, simply mount or keep a deer's antlers. Antlers add a rustic, country feeling to a home. Cut around the base of the antlers with a jigsaw or other sharp device, keeping them connected to the same piece of bone. Remove the skin from the bone and bleach the skull. Wait until the bone is white and free of brain matter. Attach the antlers to a board, wall or plaque for display.
- A fun way to mount your deer is to make a gun rack or coat holder out of its forelegs. Have a taxidermist mount the forelegs in a 90-degree angle and simple slide the form over a peg in the wall for a coat holder. Put two next to each other for a gun rack.
- Full body mounts are expensive and take the most time, but they are a beautiful way to mount a deer. Position several full-body mounted deer together or a single deer in a set-up scene in whatever position you'd like. Don't put a full-body mounted deer outside; the danger of someone shooting it is too high.
