Despite being well-known allergens, mercaptobenzothiazole and its derivatives continue to be widely used in natural and synthetic rubber, in the mining industry, and in a variety of nonrubber products. The purpose of this article is to review the epidemiology and the clinical characteristics of allergic contact dermatitis from mercapto compounds.

Allergic contact dermatitis from mercaptobenzothiazole and its derivatives has been recognized since the mid-1900s, when synthetic rubber compounds became widely produced and used. The literature now contains many reports of allergic contact dermatitis from mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and its derivatives, morpholinyl mercaptobenzothiazole (MOR), N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl sulfenamide (CBS), and dibenzothiazyl disulfide (MBTS). Mercapto compounds are used in the manufacture of natural and synthetic rubber, in mining processes, and in a wide variety of nonrubber products. The purpose of this article is to review the epidemiology and the clinical characteristics of allergic contact dermatitis from mercapto compounds. In situations in which authors of other publications did not report statistical tests for association, we performed chi-square analysis with SAS (Statistical Analysis System) software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). In situations in which patient numbers were not reported, they were calculated from reported percentages; when percentages were not reported, percentages were calculated from reported patient numbers. We also calculated pooled weighted averages for prevalence data.
