Holiday events that emphasize the giving of candies such as Valentine's Day can be difficult for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Diabetic patients who avoid consuming candy to prevent phosphorus and blood sugar spikes. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) advises to "go easy on the Valentine's Day candy."

Instead of sweets, AACE recommends a small package of handmade truffles for diabetics because chocolate, they said, is metabolized more slowly than other types of candy and will not increase blood sugar levels as quickly. In other cases, Diabetics should be mindful and opt for low-carbohydrate candy. Some candy manufactures have low-carbohydrate versions of popular Valentine's Day gifts. Still, it's a good idea to limit portion sizes of these candies. Although many are labeled "sugar-free," they have calories that affect blood sugar levels differently.

Like many foods on the kidney diet, some candies are okay in limited amounts and frequency. The major dialysis provider, Davita Healthcare Partners, lists chocolate wafer candy bars and chocolate-covered peppermints as candies that can be eaten by CKD (including dialysis) patients in limited amounts.

Aside from sugar, ingredients that can cause blood sugar levels to rise and phosphorus to be knocked out of balance quickly include potatoes, white rice and white flour.
