How to Make a Hat Tree for Displaying Hats
- 1). Find an old door that you enjoy from your local architectural salvage yard, antique store or yard sale. Purchase the remaining materials from your local home improvement store. If your hats are colorful, a white door offers the most favorable background. You can find a wide selection of decorative hooks and table legs locally and online. The home improvement store will cut your wood panel to size for you if needed.
- 2). Sand the door with a medium-grade sandpaper first, then sand it again with a light-grade sandpaper. Prime and paint both sides of the door and the wood panel.
- 3). Attach the hooks on the top section of the door, three across and three down, evenly spaced. You could place the hooks sporadically, if this would better suit your hat collection.
- 4). Measure two inches in from the 14-inch edge of the wood panel and attach the "L" brackets, one on each side. Attach the legs to the front of the wood panel, opposite the "L" brackets.
- 5). Stand the wood panel on the legs and rest the "L" brackets against the door. Mark the spots for the "L" bracket screws and drill pilot holes into the door. Attach the brackets to the door with screws. Your hat tree now has a bench that doubles as a way to stand the door. Add pillows to the bench and display your hats.
