How to Remove a Debtor From the Credit Bureau

12
    • 1). Maintain a subscription with one or more of the three major personal credit bureaus (Transunion, Experian, and Equifax). You will need a current paid account with the credit bureau in order to edit any information regarding an account that you have with a debtor.

    • 2). Make copies of the original account agreement that you made with the debtor. Also, make additional copies of all relevant records of payment. This will be necessary to prove to the credit bureau(s) that you have authorization to update the account on the credit report.

    • 3). Contact the credit bureaus that you have subscriptions with where you would like the entry on the particular credit report to be removed. Inform them of your intention to have the entry deleted. The bureau will ask you to fill out a form and to provide copies in the mail of documents proving that you are authorized to update the account.

    • 4). Send all relevant forms and documents to any credit bureaus that have requested them. About 30 days after the bureaus receive your update, they will delete the entry from the credit report of your debtor. Any agreement that you have with that debtor to delete the entry on the report will be fulfilled.

    • 5). Avoid ordering an additional copy of the credit report of the debtor. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you must have some sort of special justification to order a credit report. Such authorized reports include if you are hiring someone, if they're applying for a loan from you, applying for an apartment lease, or another similar situation. Ordering credit reports without justification is considered a violation of privacy.
