John Deere 165 Won't Crank When Hot
- 1). Park the lawn mower on a hard, level surface and set the parking brake.
- 2). Raise the operator seat to expose the fuel cap. Remove the fuel cap and inspect the inside for any blockage. If there is a blockage, clean it out with the flat-head screwdriver.
- 3). Reinstall the fuel cap. Start the engine and allow it to warm up. If the engine still shuts down after it heats up, continue to Section 2.
- 1). Allow the engine to cool down, then start it up again. Run the engine until it's hot, then shut it off.
- 2). Raise the tractor's hood. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug at the front of the engine. Plug the spark tester lead into the spark plug wire.
- 3). Attach the alligator clip from the spark tester to the end of the spark plug. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position and watch the window on the spark tester. The reading on the spark tester should be strong, consistent and blue. If the reading indicates no spark or a weak spark, the coil is bad.
