Whether you're purchasing a new stereo system for your vehicle or replacing the stock system in a clunker, purchasing new car audio equipment can be intimidating and expensive. By following a few simple steps, you can get the most for your dollar and the system that works best for you and your car. - Many people are drawn to expensive upgrades when they enter a car audio shop or big box store, without knowing what they really need in their car stereo. Stores can present an overwhelming amount of options and gadgets that are not only pricey but may not be compatible with your stereo needs. Take some time to think about how you utilize your car stereo. If you simply want a CD player with a radio, don't be talked into buying a unit that comes with other bells and whistles, such as satellite radio, MP3 compatibility, equalizers and remotes.
- Retail sales of car stereos is a highly competitive business. Different vendors, both virtual and online, offer considerable discounts throughout the year. Compare the prices of both online retailers and big box stores before purchasing. The holiday season is a great time to buy. Retailers switch out the previous year's models for newer ones and often offer discounts. If price is truly a constraint, call your local junkyard. Many working stereos from junked cars are removed from vehicles prior to their demolition and can be bought cheaply. Keep in mind these choices may not work and they won't offer all of the options of buying new.
- Avoid high-end companies that specialize in home theater and audio. Higher end stores that specialize in other realms of entertainment, like surround sound and flat screen televisions, tend not to stock a lot of car stereos. This usually is reflected in the price. You may have more personal attention at a high-end store than you would online or at a big box retailer, but chances are the same stereo can be had for less at those outlets.
- Retailers of all kinds would have you believe that purchasing and installing a new stereo requires the same amount of know-how as installing a new engine. This is not the case. Stereo removal and installation is a fairly straightforward process and the subject of several periodicals, books and online message boards. If you're confident in your ability to follow directions and have an interest in how things work, you can save hundreds of dollars by installing your stereo yourself. Just make sure to follow all necessary safety measures.
