    • While industrialization and modernization may have eradicated many of the traditions of the indigenous Amazon tribes, there are still people who live traditional lifestyles in the rain forest. According to Amazon-Tribes.com, there about 500,000 Amazon Indians left spread out among 500 different tribes, practicing traditions that soon may extinct.

    Hunting

    • Most Amazon tribes still subsist only on hunting and fishing. These tribes employ traditional methods for hunting rather than relying on modern technology. The Huaorani tribe, for example, hunt their quarry with spears and blowguns equipped with poisonous darts. Huaorani spears are most often made from the wood of the Peach-Palm tree and have sharpened barbs on both ends. Blow darts are dipped with poison from the curare plant, which paralyzes its victims. Blow guns enable tribes to hunt far away prey like birds and monkeys, and can be deadly accurate. The men in the Huaorani tribe are responsible for making and fashioning all weapons.

    Grooming and Painting

    • The people of Amazon tribes groom one another, making the tradition an important social activity. Hairstyles vary from tribe to tribe. While the Huaorani typically wear their hair long, tribes like the Kayapo shave their heads. Some tribes crop their hair short while others let their bangs grow long. Body and face painting are also important traditions to some indigenous tribes. According to Amazon-Tribes.com, face and body painting are done for a vast number reasons from religious ceremonies to scaring off evil spirits to simple ornamentation. The paints come from trees and plants that grow in the area, such as the Bixa orellana tree.

    Dancing

    • Traditional dancing is an important part of life in the Amazon. The Bora tribe practice what is known as the "Anaconde Dance," where the men dance on a flattened log to create a rhythm and wear headdresses made of macaw feathers. Children are included in most traditional dances to make sure they are passed on to the next generation. In many situations, these dances involve the entire village. Dress varies from dance to dance. In some dances, villagers will wear skirts made from bark and carry poles or long tree branches. Types of dances will vary from tribe to tribe.
