WWE SummerSlam 2015 PPV Recap and Results
SummerSlam 2015 took place on August 23, 2015, and was held at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York. Michael Cole, JBL and Jerry Lawler were the commentators for this show. In addition to the English announce table at ringside, there were also tables for the Spanish and French announcing teams as well.
- The show started with Jon Stewart in the ring as the host of the event. This is his first major performance since The Daily Show concluded.
The fans weren't impressed by that fact and gave him the "What?" treatment. He introduced WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley as his back-up for when he will interview Brock Lesnar later in the show. Mick declined to help Jon because he was under the impression that he was going to interview The Rock instead.
Randy Orton vs. Sheamus- Sheamus came to the ring with his Money in the Bank briefcase which gives him the right to challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship whenever he want to cash it in. During the match, Orton suffered a cut above his eye. Luckily it wasn't bad enough for the match to stop. After hitting an elevated DDT from the top rope, Sheamus rolled out of the ring to avoid an RKO attempt. When Sheamus lunged back into the ring trying to deliver the Battering Ram, he was hit with the RKO. Sheamus rolled out to the floor before Orton could make a pin fall attempt. Orton brought Sheamus back into the ring and missed the Punt. Sheamus was able to hit the White Noise but only got a 2 count.
Sheamus then hit two Brogue Kicks to get the win. Winner: Sheamus
WWE Tag Team Championship: Champions The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O'Neil) vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston, Big E & ) vs. Los Matadores (Diego & Fernando) vs. The Lucha Dragos (Sin Cara & Kalisto) - The first team to score a pin fall or submission will walk out of this match with the titles. El Torito was in the corner of Los Matadores while Xavier Woods was in the corner of The New Day. At one point, Titus O'Neil power bombed both members of The Lucha Dragons and one of Los Matadores at the same time. While he was doing that, Kofi Kingston tagged himself into the match. Titus delivered another power move to the other Matadore but Kofi was the legal man in the match and scored the pin despite Titus doing all the work. Winners and New Champions: The New Day
Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev- Lana was in the corner of Ziggler while Summer Rae was in the corner of Rusev. Ziggler had the advantage after applying a Sleeper Hold and hitting the Famouser. However, he was unable to hit the Zig Zag. That allowed Rusev the opportunity to apply the Accolade. He broke the hold after witnessing Lana slap Summer Rae. The action went outside of the ring and neither man was able to get back before the referee counted to 10. The brawl between the men continued until the two women got into a fight which was finally broken up by the two combatants. Winner: Double Count-Out
Stephen Amell & Neville vs. Stardust & King Barrett - Stephen Amell is the star of Arrow and this is his first wrestling match. The actor got off to a quick start but was eventually beaten down by his two opponents until he made the hot tag to the man that gravity forgot. A few moments later, Amell dove off the top rope onto both of his opponents outside of the ring which allowed Neville to then hit King Barrett with the Red Arrow to get the win for his team. Winners: Stephen Amell & Neville
Intercontinental Championship: Champion Ryback vs. Big Show vs. Miz- Just as with the tag team match, the champion does not have to be pinned or forced to submit in order to lose the title. Ryback was able to hit Big Show with the Shell Shock but was then immediately hit with a Skull Crushing Finale by The Miz. Miz was unable to pin either man. Ryback then went for a Shell Shock on Miz but was hit with a KO Punch by Big Show. Neither Miz nor Big Show were able to pin the champion. Then Big Show gave Miz the KO Punch. Ryback was able to get Big Show out of the ring and then pinned Miz. Winner: Ryback
- Jon Stewart knocked on the door of Brock Lesnar and was greeted by Paul Heyman. Heyman warned him that it wasn't a good time to talk to Brock.
Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper - The Wyatt Family was able to knock Roman Reigns out at the beginning of the match which allowed them to work over Dean Ambrose. The crowd started a "Roman's Sleeping" chant which appeared to wake him up. Dean then made the hot tag to his partner and the Brooklyn fans were not pleased by Reigns presence in the match. After hitting both his opponents with Super Man punches, the former members of The Shield hit Bray with the Doomsday Device but couldn't get the pin because of Luke Harper. After getting Luke Harper out of the ring, Dean hit Bray with the Dirty Deeds and that was followed by a Spear by Roman Reigns on Bray to get the win. Winners: Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose
Winner Takes All: WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins vs. United States Champion John Cena- Cena, a 15-time World Champion, has the opportunity to tie Ric Flair's record of 16-world championships. Rollins came close to winning the match when he tied Cena up in the Tree of Woe and then gave him a double foot stomp off the top rope. Rollins then started to talk trash and was hit with an AA for a 2 count. A few minutes later, Rollins returned the favor and hit Cena with an AA of his own for a 2 count. Cena was able to recover and trap him in the STF. Rollins escaped but was then put in a Figure Four Leg Lock. Seth reversed the move and Cena grabbed the ropes to break the hold. Cena was able to hit the AA again, but unfortunately Seth had accidentally kicked the referee while he was in the air. With no referee in the ring, Seth kneed Cena in the nose which was broken a few weeks ago. Jon Stewart entered the ring and hit Cena with a chair. Seth Rollins then gave Cena a Pedigree on the chair to get the win. Winner & New United States Champion: Seth Rollins
Elimination Match: Team Bella (Nikki and Brie Bella & Alicia Fox) vs. Team B.A.D. (Naomi, Tamina & Sasha Banks) vs. PCB (Paige, Charlotte & Becky Lynch) - Once one member of a team is eliminated from the match, the whole team is eliminated from the match. After a series of dives over and through the ropes, at one point of the match all nine Divas were out of action on the arena floor. Once the action started up again, Brie Bella pinned Tamina to knock Team BAD out of the match. After Nikki Bella hit Paige with an Alabama Slam outside the ring, Team Bella worked over Paige for several minutes until she made the hot tag to Charlotte. Charlotte put Alicia in the Figure 8 but Nikki Bella broke up the hold. After a series of tags, Brie Bella missed a Missile Drop Kick on Becky who then delivered a Pump Handle Slam to get the win for her team. Winners: PCB
Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro- Owens appeared no worse for wear considering he lost a very physical Ladder Match the night before at this building to NXT Champion Finn Balor. Cesaro tried on a few occasions to hit the Neutralizer but couldn't pick up Owens. Cesaro was able to hit the Swing and then put Owens in the Sharpshooter which Owens escaped by grabbing the ropes. The momentum of the match changed when Cesaro was crotched on the top rope. Owens then dropped him off the top rope and hit the Pop-Up Power Bomb to get the win. Winner: Kevin Owens
Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar - Brock was escorted to the ring by his advocate Paul Heyman. Brock jumped Taker as soon as he stepped into the ring but he was able to withstand that win that initial flurry of action. Brock got his head busted open when Undertaker escaped Suplex City by dropping him into the turnbuckle and then hitting Snake Eyes. Lesnar was able to recover and hit and F5 through the French announcers table. Taker recovered enough to deliver a Choke Slam and Tombstone but only got a 2 count. In an unbelievable moment, both men got up laughing because they enjoyed this battle so much and they went back to some hard hitting action. Lesnar hit a second F5, this time in the ring, and only got a 2 count. F5 number 3 also led to a 2 count. Undertaker then trapped Undertaker in the Hell's Gate which Lesnar reversed into the Kimora Lock. Brock was on his shoulders for a one count when the bell rang because the time keeper saw that Undertaker had tapped out. While the referee was arguing with the bell man, Undertaker delivered a low blow and then trapped Lesnar in the Hell's Gate. Defiant until the end, Brock gave Undertaker the middle finger before going into unconsciousness. Following the match, Heyman refused to accept the loss and declared Brock the winner by tap out. Winner: Undertaker
What does this event mean for the future?
The controversial ending of the main event is sure to set up a rematch between Brock and Undertaker, most likely at WrestleMania. That wasn't the only match to end controversially. One has to wonder not only why did Jon Stewart help Seth Rollins but whether Jon will continue to be involved in the world of wrestling. This SummerSlam has left fans with more questions than answers.
Overall Thoughts
You can dub the main event as being too big for WrestleMania and extend the show for an additional hour, but there is only one WrestleMania. Four hours is too long for most things, including every wrestling show not named WrestleMania. If this was a three-hour show then some of the filler would have been cut from this show making it much better. While not a horrible show, it was just too long and dragged at some points. Nothing on this show was epic enough to sit through four hours of this event. Hopefully SummerSlam gets trimmed back down to 3-hours next year.
