How to Draw Cartoon Hair

Using Guidelines to Properly Place Hair on a Head

    • 1

Draw a circle. This will be the head of the character.

    • 2

Make two ovals that overlap each other. Draw a third oval slightly lower that overlaps the other three ovals and touches the original circle. These ovals should mostly overlap near the mouth and extend away from each other on the top left and top right parts of the head. Draw these ovals to help assist you in placing the rest of the features on the head.

Trace the lines that will be a part of the hair. These guidelines do not have to be followed exactly.

    • 4

Trace the bottom part of the circle. Make the very bottom part more pointy to indicate a chin.

    • 5

Draw a small curving line on the bottom of the lower oval that is within the circle. This will be the mouth. Draw the nose as a simplistic triangle and draw the eyes however you'd like.

    • 6

Find a skin tone that you would like to use as a skin. Color in the face.

    • 7

Color the cornea in. One trick to use when coloring the cornea is to color the bottom part of the eye one color, the middle a slightly darker shade of that color, and the top part as the darkest shade. Then blur the entire eye.

    • 8

Pick a shade for the hair and color. You can use the same technique as the technique found in Step 6 if you would like.

    Drawing Other Hair Styles.

    • 1

Draw a glob of long hair by drawing the outline of the hair. Then draw a few lines within this glob to indicate strands. For very simplistic hair, you can even omit the lines within the outline. This is one of the most common methods of drawing straight hair.

    • 2

Draw hair with curving triangles. These triangles should follow the sides of the head and the strands will mostly point towards the head, though occasional strands will curve away from the head. You can occasionally draw triangles with no curve and some hair styles might have several triangles like this.

    • 3

Draw several triangles in any number of shapes. These triangles can go in multiple directions or mostly in one direction. Regardless, this method will create very messy looking hair.
