American Idol Isn"t Enough for Simon Cowell
It seems that Simon Cowell wants to take over the world -- or at least the world of competition reality TV. The popular American Idol judge -- who created the hit music group Il Divo and the British talent show "X-Factor" -- is now bringing his ideas to the American TV networks.
Cowell recently sold a show to NBC that he promises will be "a fun ride." According to the network, the series will feature a "colorful array of hopeful future stars" from across the country, including singer, dancers, comics and novelty acts.
"This is a show I've always wanted to make," Simon said in a press release. "This time we're looking for everything. Personally, I hope to find the next Siegfried and Roy!" The top prize will be the opportunity to headline a show in Las Vegas.
Also premiering this summer will be the Fox show Duets. Cowell is creator and executive producer of this competition series, which will pair professional singers with non-musical celebs. "Duets" sounds an awful lot like Dancing With the Stars, but with singing instead of ballroom dancing.
There will be no dancing or singing on American Inventor, the first of Simon's new shows we will see on TV. The series, which premieres March 16th on ABC, is the search for America's best new invention. Simon told Business Week Europe that he has seen all kinds of inventions during the show's open casting calls. "Anything from a race track for cockroaches to a stick to beat off a bear if one should encounter them on the way home," he said. "We had one woman who said she wanted to save every child -- her product was a cage.
We've got the wacky, the weird, and the wonderful."
With all of his new projects lined up, will Simon still have time for his judging duties on American Idol? Well, he had better make time! Simon recently signed on for five more years with the show that made him famous.
