How to Find Out the Case Number of an Adoption Proceeding
- 1). Search through any paperwork you have which pertains to the adoption case. Although its location will vary by document --- and might not appear on certain documents at all --- your case number will most likely appear somewhere near your name and address (in documents addressed to you) or shortly after the salutation. Just as you use the case number to identify yourself to the court, the court uses the case number to identify you, so many documents it sends you will have this number printed on them.
- 2). Contact your attorney to see if he has the number at hand. If your case is a very involved one and you've relegated most or all of the legal handiwork to a legal professional, you might not have ever needed the case number yourself. Whether this is the case or you simply can't find a piece of mail with the case number on it, your attorney should have the number on file.
- 3). Call or visit your local family court and ask them to look up your case number by cross-referencing your name, address and other personal information. A case number is simply a standardized means of identifying individuals and never exists independent of those individuals' personal information. If you're able to furnish this information, the court will be able to give you the case number.
