    • San Francisco is home to plenty of French food.san francisco by day image by Matt Rees from Fotolia.com

San Francisco, along with New York City, is one of the United States' culinary capitals. And Californian cuisine has a lot in common with French food: a love of fresh ingredients, simple preparations and focusing on ingredients that are in season. Unsurprisingly, there are a number of French restaurants in San Francisco. Some of them are dotted along Bush St., which runs through downtown towards the Embarcadero.

    Jeanne D'Arc

    • This restaurant is located in a small, family-run French-style inn right on Bush St. The restaurant has a formal decor, with white tablecloths, fleur de lis designs and French posters. The cuisine is traditional, with choices like frisee and endive salad with broiled duck or Muscovy duck confit with red wine and shallot sauce or filet mignon in mushroom and truffle sauce. For dessert try a orange liqueur souffle.

    Cafe Claude

    • In a little lane just off Bush Street, is this Parisian-style restaurant and cafe. The decor is classic French, with soft lighting and framed artwork and the specials written on chalkboards propped against the walls. Lunch favorites include onion soup gratinée, and salade Niçoise, which is made with tuna and onions and boiled eggs. For dinner try the seared ahi tuna with onion confit, or the coq au vin with wine port sauce.

    Le Central Bistro

    • Opened in 1974, this restaurant is San Francisco's oldest French bistro. The decor is relaxed but elegant, with fresh flowers and white tablecloths. The house specials are slow-cooked cassoulet and roast chicken with French fries. There are also a number of more adventurous items, like steak tartare or Filet of Smoked Trout served with Potato Salad and Horseradish Sauce. The dessert and wine menus are also extensive.
