Types of Skin Disorders

42

    Inflammatory

    • Inflammatory types of skin disorders include a few of the more common disorders like psoriasis, acne, eczema, ingrown hairs and diaper rash. These types of skin disorders are characterized by a reddening and swelling of the skin. Most can be treated with over the counter medications specific to the condition. Some, like psoriasis, can become severe and are best treated by a physician.

    Viral

    • Chickenpox, herpes, cold sores, measles and some warts are all viral types of skin disorders. Viral types of skin disorders are passed through contact with an infected person. Moreover, the passing of fluids is the most common way to transmit viral types of skin disorders. Many of the viral types of skin disorders are accompanied by overall flu-like symptoms like fever, headache and nausea. Typically, these skin disorders diminish over time without treatment. Technically, viral infections are incurable but are seldom chronic. While the symptoms can be treated, there are no true cures. For this reason, it is important to exercise caution when infected with viral types of skin disorders to prevent transmittal.

    Bacterial

    • Bacterial types of skin disorders are also transmitted through human contact. These types of skin disorders are more likely to be passed through skin-to-skin contact than any of the other types of skin disorders. These include scarlet fever, impetigo, boils and cellulitis. Occasionally, these skin disorders are accompanied by common cold like symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, fever and malaise. Bacterial skin disorders are easily treated with an antibiotic that is prescribed by a doctor. However, many of these bacterial types of skin disorders will improve naturally over time.

    Skin Cancer

    • Skin cancer is the most serious and deadly types of skin disorders. There are three types of skin cancers; melanoma, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell skin cancer is the most common found in over 80 percent of skin cancer patients and occurs in the top most layer of the skin. This type of skin cancer is often characterized by flat, open sores or oozing moles that do not heal. Squamous cell carcinoma is more rare (16 percent of skin cancers) and affects the middle layer of skin. Its appearance on the skin is similar to basal cell cancers. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer that spreads rapidly and attacks all layers of the skin. This type of skin disorder can be caught by examining existing moles for changes. If a skin cancer is suspected, you should visit a physician immediately to receive a checkup.

    Fungal Infection

    • Ringworm, athlete's foot and Candida are all types of fungal skin infections. Fungal types of skin disorders are typically picked up from surfaces where a fungus has been able to flourish. These surfaces are typically warm and moist areas like showers, gym equipment and saunas. Fungal skin infections are usually itchy, and symptoms like redness and flaking skin can occur as a result. Most fungal skin infections are easily cured using over-the-counter fungicides advertised, most frequently, to cure athlete's foot.

    Birthmarks

    • The occasional isolated freckle or congenital mole is often considered to be attractive; however, since these birthmarks are an abnormality of the skin, they are technically considered a type of skin disorder. Occasionally a birthmark is less attractive. Some people experience large patches of discolored skin or large growths called hemangiomas and can experience psychological issues from such birthmarks. Otherwise, most birthmarks are completely harmless types of skin disorders.
