How to Select an Amethyst Engagement Ring

7
    • 1). Examine the stone or ring you are considering purchasing. Color does not reflect the quality of the ring and should only be considered against the ring's setting. A darker stone may look better in a silver setting, whereas a lighter stone may be more appealing in a gold setting.

    • 2). Look at the amethyst under a light and jeweler's glass. This can be done at the jewelry store. Look for dull areas in the stone. These are easy to detect in an amethyst because the stone is fairly transparent. The dull spots can often be seen by simply holding the stone under a bright light and turning it. Dull spots will deaden the ring's sparkle. Even high quality stones may have them, so look at several before you make your decision.

    • 3). Select a cut based on what you know about your fiance. Hopefully you have noted the types of rings she likes and will look for an amethyst in this cut. An amethyst can be round, oval or square cut. If you aren't sure which your fiance would prefer, ask her outright. It's better than getting a ring that won't suit her personality.
