Types of Silver Appetizer Forks

14

    Cocktail or Salad Fork

    • The cocktail or salad fork is part of a five-piece place setting (the other pieces include a dinner fork, dinner knife, teaspoon and tablespoon, or place spoon). These forks are meant to be used for a variety of different appetizers or salads, and are also applicable for shrimp dishes. These forks are 5 to 6 inches in length and have three short tines.

    Seafood Forks

    • Many seafood appetizers have their own forks to make eating that particular food easier. An individual caviar fork has three tines that are close together. This keeps the caviar from falling through. A sardine fork is used for serving, rather than eating. It has several short, very wide tines that easily serve individual sardines. This serving fork can also be used for other small fish, such as anchovies. An oyster fork has three tines, with the outside tines being slightly curved. These are meant to be used to scoop an oyster out of a half shell.

    Jam/Relish Fork

    • If your appetizers are crackers or pieces of toasted bread, you need special forks for spreading jams and relishes. This type of utensil could also be called a "spork" because it resembles the offspring of a spoon and a fork. The outer edge has three tines, while the bowl of the utensil is shaped like a teaspoon.

    Pickle/Olive Fork

    • A pickle or olive fork is much larger in length than most appetizer forks, measuring 8 to 9 inches in length. The exceptionally long handle of this fork was useful for spearing olives and pickles inside the long jars in which they were stored. Because you can never have too many forks for serving pickles and olives, there is also a short-handled fork made for serving these appetizers when they are in smaller jars. This petite version measures about 6 inches in length.

    Sandwich Fork

    • A plate of finger sandwiches can be a delicious appetizer or the makings of a proper English tea. However, the last thing you want is your guests reaching for a finger sandwich with their own fingers. The sandwich fork, which is 7 to 8 inches in length, has two tines that will expertly spear the sandwich in order to move it to your plate.
