How to Develop More Backbone as a Man
- 1). Know why you hold to certain convictions. If you believe that affirmative action does more harm than good to minorities, give examples from your own life and research you may have done on this subject, and mention that this is why you believe this way. Or if you believe that hip-hop videos promote negative images of women, show the ways in which this is the case.
- 2). Be assertive when you disagree on an issue. If you're at a family reunion and your three siblings say that children should receive allowances without having to do chores, politely say that you disagree with that idea because you feel that children should learn how to work for the things they want, and when parents give allowances, the children start to feel entitled to the parents' money.
- 3). Stand up to others when necessary. If your teenage son raises his voice to you and throws an object on the floor, tell him that his actions are wrong and that you will not tolerate his disrespect as long as he's living in your house. Or if a good friend borrows money but never gives it back by a certain deadline, tell your friend that you'll no longer lend him money until he learns to pay back what he borrows.
