Las Vegas spas have no rivals for sheer size and extravagance. Most Las Vegas spas are as large, flashy and lavish as the hotels they're in. The more recent Las Vegas spas have also brought in fancy European technologies like ice fountains and water circuits. But it's not all about show; the city attracts great massage therapists and for those who don't like the massive spas, there are smaller, more intimate ones to choose from.

Vdara Hotel & Spa

This is one of the smaller, quieter spas on the Las Vegas Strip. Vdara is part of the $8.5 billion City Centre complex of hotels that opened in Dec 09, but the all-suite hotel and spa are both stunning. There is no casino (ARIA casino is right next door) and just one restaurant and one bar. The two-level spa has lots of natural elements including a stone fountain in the relaxation lounge. With just 11 treatment rooms, it feels intimate and friendly. Facilities include redwood saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms, treatments and soaking tubs.

The Spa at ARIA

The Spa at ARIA Resort and Casino is the biggest and flashiest hotel in City Centre with restaurants, clubs, the Viva Elvis show and its spa has set new records for size. The 80,000 square-foot spa on two levels has 62 treatment rooms and two new relaxation rooms with heated black mineral stone beds that emit infra-red heat and a salt meditation room with lounge chairs that vibrate to music. It also has spa suites for up to eight people.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental is probably the most intimate, opulent and expensive spa on the Strip. The beautiful 27,000 sq. ft. spa on two floors was designed to evoke 1930s Shanghai. It combines intimacy with the latest spa technologies including experience showers, a stunning hammam, and tile tepidarium chairs that keep your warm while you look out at Vegas. It caters to couples with seven of its 17 treatment rooms being couples suites.

Canyon Ranch Spa Club at the Venetian

Even in the heart of Las Vegas there's a true spa retreat where you can eat a healthy meal, scale a 40 foot rock-climbing wall, listen to lectures on nutrition and get an amazing massage. At 69,000 square feet this is a mega-spa with technology like Crystal Steam Rooms, Experiential Rains showers, Finnish Sauna and indoor Igloo. Expect the great massage therapists that Canyon Ranch is known for.

The Spa at Encore

Inspired by the architecture of classical Europe with a few modern details, this is the latest from Bellagio creator Steve Wynn and is much more restrained than its counterpart. The spa is large at 61,000 square feet and with 51 treatment room, yet manages to feel intimate. The menu includes Ayurveda treatments and of course, spectacular massages.

The Spa at Wynn Las Vegas

The Spa at Wynn has 45 treatment rooms. Its signature spa treatment is the Good Luck Ritual; an 80-minute long treatment based on the elements of Feng Shui, for the body. The Spa at Wynn offers separate facilities for men and women complete with eucalyptus steam rooms and saunas. Each area also offers a whirlpool flanked on either side by plunge pools and lush foliage. Spa Bellagio

Spa Bellagio is 55,000 square feet and has 54 treatments rooms. One signature treatment is watsu where a therapist cradles you in a special pool of water heated to your body temperature. The hotel is designed to resemble a Tuscan town complete with extravagant fountain timed to music out front and a colourful Dale Chihuly sculpture in the lobby. Take your pick of massages at the Bellagio from couples massage, hot stone massage, a mini massage, aromatherapy massage and athlete's massageâ• ¦to name but a few!

The Spa at Trump, Trump Hotel

Trump Hotel Las Vegas is more serene than you might expect and is one of the few hotels on the Strip without a casino. The Spa is suitably over-the-top with diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald body treatments using the Dubai-based Shiffa line.

Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace

Caesars was the first of the mega-resorts and still one of the most popular. The theme of ancient Rome complete with fountains and the odd centurion. Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars is one of the city's newer spas and large at 50,000 sq. feet. It features Roman baths, which include un-chlorinated hot pools, cold-plunge pools and an Arctic Ice Room with man-made snow falling from the sky!

MGM Grand Spa at MGM Grand Hotel

This 30,000 square foot spa is not as big and showy as some of the newer spas on the Strip, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. MGM Grand Spa was state of the art and huge when it opened in 1998. Now it has a cosy feel compared to newer Las Vegas spas. The more intimate and unintimidating atmosphere is very comforting. Relax, take you pick from a lovely selection of treatments and enjoy some down time in Vegas.
