How to Remove the Multifunction Switch on a 1997 Suburban
- 1). Unbolt the negative terminal on the battery with an open-end wrench. Unbolt the positive terminal next, then let the Suburban sit for 15 minutes.
- 2). Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees from center. Locate the small hole on the backside of the steering wheel, which is now situated above the steering column. Push the small-blade flat-head screwdriver into the hole to pop the air bag out of the steering wheel. Repeat on the other side of the wheel, then pull the air bag out of the steering wheel. Unplug the wiring and set the air bag in a static-free area with the horn button facing up.
- 3). Unbolt the bolt on the middle of the steering wheel with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Install the steering wheel puller on the steering wheel. Tighten down the puller with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket until the wheel comes off the steering column.
- 4). Pull out the tilt column switch with your hands. Unbolt the top and bottom plastic covers from the steering column with the 3/8-inch ratchet and the Torx-head sockets.
- 5). Unplug the wiring to the switch with your hands. Unbolt the switch from the steering column using the 3/8-inch ratchet and a Torx-head socket. Pull the multifunction switch away from the Suburban's interior.
