How to Troubleshoot the Heating in a 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva
- 1). Switch the blower fan and the heater to their highest settings (with the engine running) to ensure that air is flowing over the heater core. If you do not hear the fan begin to turn, it may need to be replaced. Check the fuse corresponding to the electric fan.
- 2). Check to see that there is enough coolant in the radiator. The heater uses a small amount of coolant to heat the vehicle. If there is not enough, the warm air flow could be restricted. Place you hand just above the incoming and outgoing hoses at the heater core. If both the hoses are not hot, coolant may not be flowing through the system correctly. The heater core may need to be replaced. Have a qualified mechanic check this out for you.
- 3). Check the fuse box for any blown or damaged fuses. Check the interior of the fuse panel for instructions on how to locate the fuse connected to the heater system. If the thin strip of metal inside the glass tube is broken, replace it with another fuse of the exact same amperage rating.
- 4). Check to see if the thermostat is stuck open. Start the engine and look under the hood. Place your hand on the upper radiator hose. If you feel coolant flowing through the hose (it will be immediately apparent) this could mean that the thermostat is stuck in the open position. Coolant should only begin to flow when the engine has warmed up.
- 5). Feel on the passenger-side carpet for any wetness. If you notice a strong, sweet odor as well, this may mean that the heater core is leaking. Have a mechanic investigate this further, as it could mean that the heater core needs to be replaced.
- 6). Ensure that all the hoses connected to the heater system are free of damage and leaks. Replace them as necessary.
