How to Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in a Chevy Camaro
- 1). Inspect all of the air conditioning lines for damage. You can use a leak detection kit from your local automotive store. Some of these will seal small cracks or punctures. If you see any other visible damage, take your Camaro to a professional to recharge the air conditioning system with refrigerant. Find the Low Pressure Side service port. It has a black cap marked L. Remove the cap.
- 2). Verify that your Camaro is R134 compatible. You will notice screw type connectors on the both the High Pressure Side and Low Pressure Side lines in models using R12 refrigerant. A system that uses R134 refrigerant will have quick connect ports instead of screw type connectors.
- 3). Check the air conditioning system pressure in your Chevy Camaro by using an automotive air conditioning pressure gauge. Keep in mind that in order to get an accurate reading, the air conditioner has to be on the coldest setting with maximum blowing power.
- 4). Attach the refill hose to the quick connect port on the Low Pressure Side of the air conditioning system. The Low Pressure Side port is smaller than the High Pressure Side port.
- 5). Turn the valve on the refill hose slowly. This allows the system to suck the refrigerant out of the can. Make sure you hold the can upright unless the manufacturer's instructions direct you to do something else. It can take 10 minutes or longer for the can to completely empty.
- 6). Add more refrigerant if the pressure is still lower than the minimum acceptable range. If you add more than one can, check the pressure often after the first can.
- 7). Close the valve when you are done recharging the air conditioner. Remove the refill hose and replace the cap on the quick connect port.
