    • 1). Hold a stud finder against the wall of your closet. Run it along the wall until it beeps or lights up. Mark the location of the stud where the finder indicates with the pencil. Studs are generally spaced every 32 inches. Make a second mark on the stud next to the first, marked stud.

    • 2). Place the shelf standard -- the long, upright piece with slots for adjustable brackets -- to the wall, along the stud marks, and mark the location of the top screw hole.

    • 3). Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole into the top screw hole pencil mark.

    • 4). Insert a screw into the top hole of the standard and screw it into the pilot hole to hang the shelf standard. Hold the level against the standard to make sure it is perfectly vertical. Mark the location of the bottom screw with the pencial, drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole and secure the bottom screw.

    • 5). Place the second shelf standard and use the level to make sure its top is level with the first shelf standard. Mark the top screw hole then repeat Step 4 for the second standard.

    • 6). Insert the shelf holder and place the shelf onto the holder. Insert a screw through the bottom of the holder to secure it in place, if there is one. Repeat with all the shelves. Not all holders have a place for a screw. Simply set the shelf on the holder and secure it according to the instructions included with your shelving kit.
