What Is a Zoned System in HVAC?
- A thermostat in each zone provides temperature control for that zone. The zone may be one specific room such as a master bedroom, or a group of rooms such as a kitchen/dining room/family room combination.
- Electronically controlled dampers (or doors) in the air ducts control the flow of heated or cooled air into each zone by opening and closing.
- The central zone control coordinates all of the elements of the zoned system including the thermostats, the dampers and the HVAC system. Based on signals received from the thermostats, the central zone control opens or closes dampers and tells the HVAC system to cycle on or off to meet the temperature demands of the thermostat.
- Zoned HVAC systems can improve your comfort. For example if the upstairs is hotter than the downstairs during the summer, set the upstairs thermostat for additional cooling.
- You can save energy by heating or cooling only the areas that are currently occupied.
