What to Feed a Dog That Is in Renal Failure

32

    Low Phosphorus and Protein

    • In some cases, it is what you don't feed your dog that helps support renal function. Veterinarians normally recommend lower protein and phosphorus diets, since these nutrients are more difficult for the kidneys to process and limiting them lightens the load. Salt is generally restricted as well. Special diets are available that supply energy based on fats and carbohydrates instead. Some veterinarians, however, feel strongly that it is not the amount of protein that matters but the quality and recommend a diet that includes adequate amounts of high-quality protein. Most agree that lowering phosphorus intake is a good idea. Any diet for a dog with renal failure should include plenty of extra water to help the kidneys flush the body of toxins. Using wet food as opposed to dry can increase the amount of water your dog takes in. Note that regular canned food usually contains more protein than dry food, so be sure to compare labels correctly and consult your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist.

    Fatty Acids

    • Fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 will give your dog a shiny coat, but this is the least of his concerns if he is in renal failure. These essential fatty acids also encourage prostaglandin synthesis for optimal cell membrane function. Omega-3 and omega-6 help to regulate blood pressure and provide support for best organ function. It is important to have the right balance of omega-3 and omega-6, since the wrong combination can make renal failure worse. The exact amounts of fatty acids may be different for each animal. Research into the exact doses under different conditions of renal failure is ongoing. The right combination may reduce inflammation, making the kidneys work more effectively and increases blood flow to these vital organs.

    Other Supplements

    • There are herbal preparations purported to support renal function in dogs. Herbs available in commercial preparations for urinary tract support include burdock, dandelion and cleavers, although Dr. Susan Wynn, executive director of the Georgia Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, recommends that dandelion be used with caution in kidney disease. Another supplement, calcitriol, is sometimes prescribed for dogs in renal failure. It is a hormone that comes in liquid or pill form. Calcitriol is similar to vitamin D and is normally made by the kidneys. In renal failure it is not produced or not produced in adequate amounts and, therefore, sometimes added to the diet.
