Usually a pregnancy can last for up to 280 days or 40 weeks. This runs counter to the belief that a pregnancy last for nine months. Doctors use a method where they add seven days to the day of your last period. Then they subtract three months from the result. This calculation is based on a standard cycle of 28 days. Not all women follow this cycle and the time of ovulation is different for each person. Many do not even remember when they last saw their period making this method unusable.

If you are unsure of you last menstrual period, an ultrasound method can be used to determine the when the baby is due by measuring the size of the fetus. This is usually done in the first trimester for the greatest accuracy.

There are tools online that may help you to determine the due date. You will have to know the date of your last period as well. If you do not follow the 28 day period then you can adjust the days to suit your cycle.

The height of the uterus may also be used to determine when the baby will be born. This is calculated by measuring the mother's belly. When the height of the uterus is determined, the size of the baby can be calculated. The size can help in figuring out the age of the baby and then the due date.

A baby's heartbeat is usually used to determine how far along you are in the pregnancy. There is also the quickening or baby movements, that are believed by some to determine the due date as well. When the baby's movement are felt, 5 months are checked afterward to reach the due date. This is not entirely accurate as all mothers are different and feel their baby's at different times.

In the past, there were other methods that were used. One method was to start from the last menstrual period and count ten moon cycles. This was suggested by a German obstetrician and is now known to be inaccurate.
