Often affectionately referred to as "Southie", South Boston includes the southern areas of the city limits. Southie is home to a great number of people who claim Irish ancestry, but there are also many families of Lithuanian and Polish descent. While not as numerous as in decades past, today there are still a few Polish restaurants scattered throughout South Boston. - Cafe Polonia offers numerous traditional Polish dishes in an upscale, casual atmosphere. The modest beer list features 10 Polish brews, as well as a handful of other varieties from elsewhere in Eastern Europe. The wine list, also on the small side, features varietals from Europe, South Africa, and the United States. Entrees include pierogi, stuffed cabbage, sausages, latkes, goulash, and meat-filled potato dumplings. Diners can finish their meal with desserts such as chocolate babka, apple crisp, and fruit-filled blintzes. The restaurant is fully handicap accessible, accepts all major credit cards, and is open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner. Reservations are strongly recommended.
