Hard Drive Crash Horror Story

11
I can unflaggingly state the three words that strike the most angst in computer owners is hard drive crash.
I know it from personal experience.
In fact, I call it my hard drive crash horror story.
If you own a computer and haven't experienced your own horror story, believe me you will.
The statistics are on my side when I make that statement.
Even the computer manufacturers tell people to backup their data.
My particular story varies from the usual plight in that I not only lost every piece of data, anniversary photos, graphics and videos but I lost my newsletter file.
At the time, I was publishing a financial newsletter and sending it out to over 3000 subscribers.
This may not sound like a horror story but I was publishing weekly and had a next day deadline when the inevitable happened.
I don't know what anybody would do but I went into a state of shock.
Yes, it is true I had my archives on my website and the subscribers name and email address in my email program but everything else was gone.
I could still publish my newsletter from a friend's computer but that was all I could do.
I had to re-write the entire newsletter and find the graphics and everything else I had planned to include.
I couldn't get back the photos, I couldn't re-create all of my lost files and I surely couldn't re-capture all the documents I had waiting to be used in the newsletter or published to the website.
In other words I was data less and it was a very uncomfortable feeling.
For me, this was my grand wake up call to implement a data backup service.
If you are like me, you had been told to always backup your data.
But, you don't do it until you experience your own horror story.
I resorted to both an online backup service and a stand alone hard drive backup device.
You could say I engaged in overkill but I haven't lost any data since.
There are several backup software programs, online backup services and computer backup services available for minimal cost in today's world so it is penny wise and pound foolish not to perform a backup.
I've heard people say they performed an Internet backup so their data is safe.
It really doesn't make a difference what you call it, do it.
You must treasure those pictures, those letters, those files, etc.
or you wouldn't have them on your computer.
Online storage comes in various sizes and grades.
The best I've found perform numerous services like syncing all your pc's, allowing data retrieval off your mobile device, do automatic backups every time you reboot or restart your computer and offer unlimited storage.
They also allow you to access your data from anywhere in the world.
For the traveler, this is a very good thing because you aren't tied to a particular location.
Fortunately for computer owners in today's environment, the backup services are more sophisticated and perform more services and functions.
Without a doubt this means fewer horror stories for computer owners.
Hard drive crashes will always happen but you no longer are forced to lose all of your data.
