Bed bugs have not been a problem in the US for close to 50 years that's why people are not aware about them. Whenever we left home, there were possibility that we might encounter bed bugs and bring bed bugs back home with us. Before booking any hotel for stay, do check its rooms and bathrooms for cleanness and bed bugs. Leave your luggage at the reception and inspect the rooms first. Go for a proper bug inspection.

Read the Reviews
Before booking any hotel for stay, just take a look at its reviews by its customers. You will come to know about its sanitation standards, housekeeping services and cleanliness well in advance and this will also save your time in inspecting it.

Ask for sanitation standards
Ask the information from the reception if the hotel belongs to the International Housekeeper's Association or whether it has been certified by the International Sanitary Supply Association. Hotels that belong to such associations typically prioritize cleanliness.

Where to Look
Scan the exterior, lobby, elevator shafts and dining areas when entering.
No one wants to spend the night in a hotel room that has no or less housekeeping services. If your are not satisfied with your hotel room then you have the right to ask for a new room. So, as you enter the room, take a look around.
Check the floor, bed specially linen for bed bugs and furniture for any stains. Pull back the bed sheet and inspect the mattress. Check the bathroom, toilet and bathtub for cleanliness or leaking water.
Carry a small flashlight with you. It will help you in finding any bugs in the room. Turn the lights off in the hotel room. Flash black light into each corner to find spots and stains.

Lastly, look at the air conditioner and fans. Make sure there are no foul smells in and around the room otherwise this could make a very uncomfortable stay for you in the hotel.

Examine product quality
Just check which products do hotel use like soap, toilet paper, facial tissue in the hotel rooms. Examine their product quality and report if you find any expired product.

Avoid using these items
Unsealed glassware - Use only sealed plastic-wrapped containers.
Toilet seat - Carry a small can of disinfectant spray or wipes to make it sanitize to use.
Coffee maker - Mostly it has been filled with all weird stuff so make to get it cleaned.
Television remotes - Touched by many, cleaned by few.
Iron - Mostly rusty iron can spoil your white dress.

What to do if you find anything
If you find anything that alarms you, ask the front desk to your concerns immediately. Most probably they offer you another room but moving to another room may not be the answer. You should carry out your inspection in the room you are offered. If you do not get satisfied, speak to manager and if this still gets you nowhere, consider staying at a different hotel.

Bed bug cases are on the rise in all over the world -- but the majority of hotel rooms are free from these irksome insects. Your best bet is to check your bed for bed bug signs, keep your suitcase in a trash bag during your stay and vacuum your suitcase when you get home.
