The Different Types and Causes of Skin Pigmentation

12
Excess skin pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, is fairly common problem with a variety of causes. The good news is that there are effective treatments for skin spots, freckles and age spots caused by skin pigmentation.

Today, the most effective type of treatment is alexandrite laser. It works better than the older laser technologies because an exact wavelength of light is set which goes deep down into the lower layers of the skin where the discoloration is located. The light attaches to the melanin destroying it. This results in the elimination of discoloration.

There are several causes for this type of skin problem.

One of the causes is UV exposure. For people who live in very sunny locations, too much time is spent directly in the sun. Because of this, the skin is overexposed to UV rays.

Sun spots are not cancerous. This type of skin problem is caused by direct sunlight and shows up on the skin that is more exposed to the sun. This is usually on the back of hands, the forehead and the cheeks.

Freckles are a common type of skin spotting that affects mostly Caucasians. The tiny clusters of melanin worsen with continued exposure to the sun. They can be treated with some sun creams, but laser treatments are more effective for removing them.

Melasma is a form of skin spots that show up due to a combination of UV rays and hormones. These are commonly found on the face of pregnant women.

Hemangioma and port-wine stains are two types of skin spotting that are normally treated with laser treatments, chemical peels or creams. Chemical peels work well for treating a lot of skin discoloration problems. There is usually a significant change noticed after the first chemical peel. These peels are good for treating spots due to aging or over exposure to the sun

Post-trauma hyper spotting is caused by some type of trauma, such as burns, cuts or acne. This appears as dark spots on the skin.

A common reaction for people with facial spotting is to find a good skin whitening product to eliminate the problem. However, most products that whiten the skin contain hydroquinone. This product is actually banned in some countries because it can leave a bluish black spotting inside the skin. Consequently, products with hydroquinone are not really effective for treating the skin problem.

Despite the wonderful laser technology that is now being used for removing skin spots, the best way to take care of the problem is by using sunscreen.

Today, most people are making an effort to wear sunscreen when they are out in direct sunlight or at the beach. What most people do not realize is that most sun damage occurs on cloudy days or when you are driving in the car. This type of repeated exposure can cause spotting on the face and hands and could potentially result in someone wanting the spots removed.
