How to Set Wooden Posts

9
    • 1). Measure and position posts approximately six to eight feet apart. Set corner or end posts first. Stretch a string from each corner to align and then mark other post locations.

    • 2). Dig all holes with a post-hole digger at least three times the post width and factoring at least a third of the total post length being buried. Dig the holes as straight as possible and measure periodically with a tape measure or yardstick to ensure accurate depth.

    • 3). Add two shovel loads of gravel at the base of each hole to help anchor the post and aid in protecting the wood from direct contact with the soil. Set the post down into the hole and push it down slightly into the gravel.

    • 4). Place medium sized rocks along the base of the post to help hold it upright, and check all four sides with a level to get the post as vertically straight as possible. Mix and pour concrete evenly to within four inches of the top and along all sides to avoid shifting the post while pouring.

    • 5). Use stakes to brace the post while the concrete sets for a few hours. Continue to check straightness with a level while aligning stakes. Lightly tamp the concrete with a small board to remove any air bubbles.

    • 6). Remove the stakes and add more concrete to above the top, allowing it to mound around the post. Round the concrete with a trowel to keep water from collecting around the base of the post.

    • 7). Let the concrete dry for several days and settle in place before completing the construction project.
