How to Fish at the Hoover Dam
- 1). Do not attempt to fish immediately downstream or in Lake Mead immediately above the Hoover Dam. Warning signs are clearly posted in areas where fishing is prohibited. Powerful water releases downstream can cause rapid water rise while intakes and security concerns limit access above the Dam.
- 2). Purchase the required fishing license and stamps when fishing from a boat on Lake Mead. Obtain either a Nevada or Arizona license and special stamp from the other state. A "Second Pole" stamp is also required by both states to fish more than one rod at a time. Both states allow multiple hooks, lures or flies on a single line; however, Arizona allows only two baited hooks or lures per line while Nevada allows up to three per line. All license and stamps are available from local retailers and online.
- 3). Obtain a "Trout Stamp" if you intend to specifically fish for and or keep trout caught in Lake Mead or the Colorado River.
- 4). Familiarize yourself with the fish species that are found in Lake Mead and in the Colorado River. Lake Mead offers largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, green sunfish, crappie, blue gill, catfish and other game fish species. The Colorado River offers excellent opportunities for trout as well as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass and other fish species.
- 5). Schedule a trip with a guide located in the area when planning your first fishing trip. A guide can provide a good overview of the waters above and below the dam, help arrange for and explain fishing license requirements, and provide information about the fish species in the surrounding waters as well as lure selection.
