How to Use Your Lowrance Fish Finder

37
    • 1). Press the power button located on the front right side of the Lowrance fish finder to turn the unit on.

    • 2). Press the Menu button, which also is located on the front right side of the unit. Use the arrows to look through the options until you find the one that gives you the choice of automatic or manual operation. Choose automatic operation and then press the Exit or Home button to go back to the main screen.

    • 3). Find the reading on the screen that shows you the depth of the water. It will be designated in feet and appear in one of the upper corners of the screen. Other readings will be of the water temperature in Fahrenheit and the speed of the boat in miles per hour.

    • 4). Focus on the bottom portion of the Lowrance's screen and find the line that extends from one side of the screen to the other. This line identifies the bottom of the body of water where your boat sits. Look closely at the line. If it is dark and thick, you are over a hard bottom. If it is thin and light, you're over a soft bottom. Also note the contour of the line, going from left to right. A flat line signifies a flat bottom. The depth of the water is decreasing if the line is going upward, increasing if the line is going downward.

    • 5). Check the line that represents the bottom and look for vertical lines that extend upward (toward the surface). Straight lines may signify trees, timber or long and thin vegetation. Other types of vegetation may grow along the bottom and appear as thick, short lines. Rocks will appear as bumps along the bottom and likely will be darker than the line that represents the rest of the bottom.

    • 6). Pay attention to the open water, which is that part of the Lowrance screen between the bottom and the surface. You're most likely to see fish on this part of the screen, so look for arches or icons in the shape of fish. The unit will show most of the fish that are down there, though you probably won't be able to see fish that are very near the surface or the bottom. The larger the icon on the screen, the larger the fish beneath you.
