Growing Problems With Pachysandra Terminalis
- P. terminalis need a location in full or partial shade with an organically rich, well-drained soil. The plants turn pale yellow and may die out in patches when grown in poorly drained sites or when exposed to too much sun.
- P. terminalis is subject to diseases such as leaf blight, leaf spot and stem canker. Avoid overhead watering whenever possible and promote good air circulation by thinning plants periodically to help prevent diseases.
- Since P. terminalis is often planted under trees, they are often surrounded or covered with falling leaves in autumn. Leaves limit air circulation around the plants, and they can form a soggy mat that limits drainage. While it is important to remove falling leaves around P. terminalis, vigorous raking can snap off the tops of mature plants, or separate them from their roots. Rake gently, or blow fallen leaves from around the plants.
- Dormant oil and insecticidal soap sprays are effective against the small sucking insects that sometimes infest P. terminalis. Use them in early spring. These are contact insecticides, so be sure to coat the undersides of leaves where they like to feed.
