How to Make Heat Transfer T-Shirts

Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Iron a solid colored T-shirt to smooth out any wrinkles. Avoid T-shirt colors that are too dark when using detailed iron-on designs.
2

Insert your iron-on transfer paper into the paper tray on your inkjet printer. You can print your design from styles available for free online or download T-shirt design templates from a range of printer software websites. Iron-on heat transfer paper is available at most craft and office supply stores.
3

Open your iron-on design template in your word processor software. Adjust the margins in your document so that they are as narrow as the settings will allow. Click "File" then "Page Set Up" if you are working from a template in a web browser. Adjust your margins to approximately 1/4 inch. Turn off the header and footer on the page set up menu so that the date and page number does not print on your transfer paper.
4

Click "File" then "Print." Your design will appear backwards when finished printing. Cut out the design from the heat transfer paper and place it printed side down onto the center of your T-shirt.
5

Heat your iron to the "Wool/Cotton" setting. Make sure the steam is turned off, as it could melt your design. Press the iron over the design in a circular motion for five to 10 seconds. Peel off the heat transfer paper from your T-shirt. Your design will appear on the center of your T-shirt.
