Tips on Morning Sickness

21

    Relief Through Diet

    • Rather than eating three large or average-sized meals a day, it's easier for your stomach to handle several small meals instead. Avoid allowing your stomach to be empty, but don't overeat either. Snack on something small every one to two hours to keep your stomach busy.

Keep plenty of fluids in your system. Becoming dehydrated can lead to other problems and make the situation worse. Drink lots of water; it may not feel as though water is actually making you feel better, but being dehydrated feels much worse.

Bland foods will be easier for your stomach to digest. Avoid grease and spicy foods that can lead to heartburn and make the nausea worse. It may be better to avoid even smelling spicy or greasy foods as certain smells can trigger nausea as well. Eat more carbohydrates and protein and try to cut out any unnecessary fats.

    Relief Through Lifestyle

    • Depending on the severity of your morning sickness, restaurants can wreak havoc on your senses. With the heightened sense of smell that comes with pregnancy, even grocery stores can overload the senses. Avoid cigarette smoke and anything else that smells strongly, such as incense.

Create habits that can help stave off the nausea, such as eating a few crackers before getting out of bed in the morning. When you do get out of bed, don't get up too fast as this can cause lightheadedness.

Don't underestimate the power of sleep. Make sure you're getting plenty of rest at night and take naps as needed. Your body has a much better chance of fighting off the nausea if you allow it to recooperate.

Exercise to keep in the best shape possible. Even a 10-minute walk may make you feel better. Exercising on a daily basis can help you to avoid bloating and nausea.

    Quick Remedies When Nausea Occurs

    • Ginger is a common natural cure for nausea and comes in many forms. Drink ginger ale or eat a few gingersnaps. Sip slowly and take small bites so as not to make the situation worse. Salty foods are also known to help. It can be a process of elimination to find what works and what makes it worse. When you find what helps the most, stock up and keep it on hand when you need it.

Lie down on your bed and turn out the lights. Sometimes taking away all external factors can help you to feel better.

Try drinking something with carbonation to make you expel gas. Sometimes the simple release of even the smallest sir bubble can help to ease your stomach.
